Harris Breaks Glass Ceiling Becoming First Woman VP of USA

The party is just getting started. Really.

On Saturday, November 7, former Vice President Joseph Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 U.S. Presidential race. The Associated Press made the determination after Biden won enough votes to secure the lead in the states of Nevada and Pennsylvania. The confirmation also certified Cali. Senator Kamala Harris as the next Vice President, solidifying her place in history and building upon her already long lists of firsts, making her the first woman, the first black, and the first Asian-American to secure the role.

The world was left waiting after votes from key battleground states were still being counted even after election night on Tuesday in spite of President Donald J. Trump declaring victory. Millions of people waited in suspense to hear the election results. As the days mounted, so did the votes Biden received as poll workers labored tirelessly to finish counting and report on results. Knowing the magic number of 270 to clinch the White House victory, as reports continued to surface, it was during this time that many news outlets doubted that the president had a path to victory. Even though the election was not called for Biden early on, by Friday it certainly looked as though he was well on his way to becoming the 46th President.

Tonight both candidates took to the stage in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Delaware to give fervent victory speeches. Biden’s heartfelt connection to the audience left no doubt that the State Senator is ready to move forward and lead the country as a president to all. After sprinting out onto the stage Biden spoke to a deeply divided nation and emphasized that “this is a time to heal America.” As a packed crowd of onlookers blew horns and cheered loudly at the tailgate style gathering, the Senator pledged firmly to be “a president who seeks not to divide, but unify, who doesn’t see red states and blue states, but only sees the United States.”

It was reported by CNN that more than 74 million people had voted for Biden officially making him the most voted for candidate in a presidential election. Biden, who will become the oldest president in U.S. history to take office in January did not miss the opportunity to proudly proclaim the fact stating, “We won with the most votes ever cast for a presidential ticket in the history of this country.”

For her part, Harris received a roaring ovation when she acknowledged Biden for selecting her as his running mate. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities,” Harris said.

Acknowledging that while he is the certified winner, there is work to do to unify and heal the country. The Senator made a plea to Trump supporters: “I understand the disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of times myself. But now, let’s give each other a chance.” Meanwhile the president, who was photographed on the golf course earlier in the day when Bide was declared the winner, has yet to congratulate Biden and according to multiple sources has no plans to concede.

So, as stated initially, the party is just getting started. Will the Republicans rally around Trump to denounce the president-elect and vice-president-elect, or will there be some form of a compromise of power? The world will be watching. Until then, Democrats will continue to celebrate the historic victory, standing firm behind Biden and Harris making a plea for unity, which for many signifies a new day in politics, and a new day for women in politics.

As the celebration came to a close, the sky filled with a fireworks display resembling a spectacular 4th of July show. Biden and Harris, both surrounded by family members, relished the moment as both their names sparkled in the clear sky. Other visually appealing fireworks featured a map of the United States, the number 46, USA, and the words president-elect, and vice-president-elect, respectively.

All eyes were on the former Vice President as he sowed seeds of hope to try to bring the country together in his victory speech. “I sought this office to rebuild the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation, the middle class and to make America respected around the world again,” Biden said.
