In this series Spotlight on Philanthropy, I intend to recognize charities across the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area that are making a positive impact on the community.

Today, I want to introduce you to the Parent Action Coalition for Education (PACE) which is doing good in the neighborhood. Led by Dr. Gloria Zuurveen, who is the founder and president, the 501(c)3 non-profit was established in 2002. The purpose of the nonprofit organization is to engage parents in the lives of disadvantaged youth and young adults.

“Families and residents play a critical role in our children’s education. We believe the fate of our city and state depends on our efforts,” said Zuurveen.

As one of the key decision makers, Zuurveen makes sure that the organization has a voice. She champions initiatives through the media and Internet, newspapers and news services.

Dr. Zuurveen also serves as a volunteer at the Grace Hopper STEM Academy, a Public Independent Residential Middle Charter School for girls, on the St. Mary’s Academy campus in Inglewood. As a part of community outreach efforts in support of the Parent Action Coalition for Education (PACE), Zuurveen operates a local Thrift Store, and all of the proceeds are put back into the organization.

Zuurveen also serves as the editor-in-chief for Pace News, Inc., an NAACP Image award-winning community newspaper available throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area, and online.
