In this series Spotlight on Philanthropy, I intend to recognize charities across the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area that are making a positive impact on the community.

I recently stumbled upon a charity called Stop the Violence, Increase The Peace Foundation based in Inglewood, CA that is doing good in the neighborhood. Led by Khalid Shah, who is the founder and chairman of the board, the 501(c)3 non-profit was established in 1993.

Research shows that the foundation provides services to youth, families, and victims across a spectrum of categories including conflict and dispute resolution training, grief counseling, and victims’ advocacy.

“By partnering with the local community, law enforcement, faith-based agencies and probation officers, we enact lasting change and advance harmony across Southern California. Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, and the City of Riverside comprise of many communities positively impacted by our services over the past 27 years,” the organization boasts.

The organization also offers COVID-19 resources, anger management counseling, parenting classes, domestic violence courses, victim support services, and substance abuse classes.

“I love this foundation. It’s a positive foundation that brings out positive results for the unprivileged youth. They really relate to the streets and problems that the youth deals with daily.” said Eric Marshall who raved about the organization.

The foundation was recognized with the 2003 Community Responsibility Award from the Los Angeles Urban League, and the 1999 Community Responsibility Award from the LAPD, according to its website. For his efforts with the foundation, Shah is also the recipient of the KCET Unsung Hero Award.

“I remember marching the streets of Inglewood and Los Angeles. 23 years later, this foundation is still improving the lives of others through community service, resources and development,” according to Yolanda Ervin-Battle.

To date, the City of Los Angeles has issued Stop The Violence, Increase The Peace Foundation with a Certificate of Recognition on three separate occasions, as recent as 2020, also in 2004, and dating back to 1997. Since 1993 Stop The Violence, Increase The Peace Foundation has provided a safer community for Southern California residents, according to their site.

The foundation is dependent on donations and grants and states that all gifts allow them to continue their work of increasing peace while diminishing violence in our society.

“There are no words that can express how much Brother Shah has done for me and the people of Inglewood. He has help me in so many ways. Him and his organization are a blessing straight from god. Thank you for everything you save my life and helped me get back on track,” Jonathan Francois said.

Other board members include Bill Duke, Sharde McDaughtery, Lawanda Monroe, and Dr. Ronnie Johnson. Attorney George McNeal, Sr. and Hugo Rojas serve as the treasurer and secretary, respectfully.

For those who would like to help with their cause, donations in the form of checks can be made out to “Stop The Violence, Increase The Peace Foundation” and can be mailed to 323 N. Prairie Ave, Suite 401a, Inglewood, CA 90301.

The organization says all donations are tax-deductible.
